What is Data Disaster Recovery?

Data Disaster Recovery is the ability of an application or application environment to be restored to a point of integrity in the event of an unforeseen system hardware or software failure. The system failure may be caused by an external event such as a storm, earthquake, power failure, etc., or an internal mechanical breakdown. Disaster recovery techniques require that periodic checkpoints (backups) be established from which the application or environment could be restored with full system and data integrity.

Data Disaster Recovery Tips

1. Data replication and tape backup is very helpful. Think of the possible hazards your business could face. These can range from natural disasters and human error, such as floods or fires to terrorism, hackers or disgruntled employees. Also consider potential exposure from surrounding businesses.

2. Decide what level of disaster recovery is required for your business.

3. Create a disaster recovery plan to remain in operation if your office becomes unusable. Notify your employees of this plan and provide regular updates.

4. Establish a system whereby two or three trusted employees receive automated phone or text 'event notifications' of disasters. These employees should be trained to fulfill basic disaster recovery/back-up tasks in case the IT administrator is unavailable. Have an arrangement with a third-party service provider if necessary.

5. Carry out disaster simulations at least four times a year to hone your disaster recovery team's skills and to make sure your disaster recovery strategy is kept fresh.
